19JulThe Wok Cafe, Penang food in Kota Damansara

I believe many of you have already heard of this relatively new restaurant The Wok in Kota Damansara which serves very nice Nyonya and Penang food. There are already a number of blogs about this place such as the one from Sloppy Chic and you can see lots of newspaper featuring about this place pasted everywhere in the restaurant.

The restaurant is nicely decorated but is not very big, seating capacity is pretty average. So most of the time it will be full unless you come at odds hours. They open from morning till night and they serve mostly ala carte dishes during night.

I been here twice so far trying as much as I can. We started out with their Nyonya dishes. The popular one such as Gulai Tumis Fish is very (very very very!!) nice. It was one of the best I ever eaten. I love the nyonya gravy to the max. You can choose a variety of fish with different pricing and we chosen stingray. The price is RM15 for a good single portion.

Next up was their Inche Kabin, also a popular dish in Nyonya cusine. While I had better one elsewhere, the one here is still consider ok.

And lastly the signature Nyonya dish, Jiu Hoo Char. It was a dish made using Turnip, dried cuttlefish and to be eaten together with lettuce. One of my favorite dish during CNY so I learned how to cook it some time back. Check out my version here. I find the one here at The Wok is slightly bland to my tasting.

On our other visit, we decided to try their popular Penang hawker food that I have been reading good reviews in every blogs. My wife who is from Penang was acting up all excited when she found out that they serve authentic Hokkien Char here. She talked about eating this all the time when she was young and was almost impossible to find it ever since she moved to KL.

We also tried the Char Koay Teow, the signature dish of Penang. As I have never eaten a true Penang CKT, but the one here can consider one of the best CKT I eaten in KL/PJ. It was very tasty and after you dig around, you will know the reason. Can you see all the big chunks of lards in the dish? Extremely sinful (and tasty)!! The only complaint, it lack some “wok hei”…

On the beverages, they have quite a few desserts and drinks. We tried their home made Soya Bean with Gula Melaka which is very nice, their Ice Kacang which is pretty standard, and lastly their…

…Nanga Sago which is one of the MUST TRY!! I been there twice and ordered it twice!

Overall the food tasted very good, service was good and ample parking space (for now since is a new area). Pricing is a bit pricey than average and I wish they have more seating capacity.

We didn’t get to try their Penang Prawn mee because it was sold out, we got to go back some other time for this!

I love this restaurant very much as it really serve very nice penang hawker food such as Char Koay Teow and Hokkien Char. I am keen to try out the Prawn mee as it is 1 of their famous dishes.

It is hardly to find this type of Hokkien Char in KL/PJ, so during my 1st visit when i saw someone eating it.. I was like “YES” this is the dish that i’m gonna tried. Even though it is not as good as the one i used to have but it is consider Passed :d/
