What is better than eating Gula Melaka (Palm Sugar) at Malacca itself. Recently I went on a day trip to Melacca for some food crawl for some of the famous food over there. The last time I visited Malacca was some 20 years ago in one of those primary school trip. I couldn’t remember much but I’m sure they didn’t bring us to eat food like chicken rice ball or cendol.
My first impression when I reached Malacca is why are there so many Singaporean visitors. And I thought Penang chaotic road and jam is bad, Malacca is even worst. The road in Malacca especially inside town is even smaller, with most popular food shop being overly crowded with queue so long until you have to line up on the road. Navigating around finding the destination is so painful and not to mention finding a carpark!
We head to the popular Jonker Street to try one of the popular Baba Cendol. As usual, the queue is super long and the seating capacity is super small.

Finding a vacant seat is almost impossible in this crowded small shop.

Typical cendol like you can find everywhere, but miles better because of the quality Gula Melaka used. I myself ate 3 bowls of it.

I may have tasted many good Gula Melaka in KL, but the Gula Melaka used here is totally mind blowing. It is extremely thick compare to those diluted one you found elsewhere. Initially I thought why they put so little Gula Melaka only compare to those in KL, but the one here is extremely concentrated and the fragrance is so intense.

They have a few variants, and I also tried the one with extra Durian making the taste even more intense. The pricing is not that expensive, service was fast and it is tasty. Just that the seating capacity is too little only, many have to eat standing up.

Next up coming soon will be a post about the popular and heavenly Malacca’s Mille Crepe cake.

yummmm i also makan there the last time i went jonker street.
happy 2010 to u!!!
Wow! The gula melaka looks really delicious la!
I still go for the normal cendol after I’ve tried for both - the special (with durian) and normal one.. .I felt that the durian taste was too strong untili can’t really taste the gula melaka
i guess whenever we miss this, we can still go to PJ old town food court for a similar version of this.. that one is consider quite good for KL standards.
Where is the one in PJ that you mentioned?
